GO BIG!

I've begun working on a larger scale with the intention of creating a 4ft x 4ft piece in the very near future.  At the moment, I am focusing on 16 x 20 as my new minimum size.  It is amazing how scary a bigger size can be the first couple of times your attempt it.  But what is even more amazing is how quickly it becomes the new normal.

If you are hesitant to go big, give yourself a pep talk.  Ask yourself some questions and find out what is blocking you.  For me, I had this silly notion that what I was doing in my art journal or 8.5 x 11 or 12 x 12 size just wouldn't translate or wouldn't look as good in a bigger format.  I also found myself not wanting to waste that much paint or ruin a larger canvas.  What?!?!  Silly, I know!  So I started with an over sized children's picture book I got at a used book store.  The pages are nice and thick and have a semi-glossy finish.  After a light coat of gesso, I was doing my thing on a larger scale.  I've now graduated to canvas board and I am thrilled with the results I am getting.

Are you ready to GO BIG???  If not, ask yourself what is holding you back and then go for it!

  1. Gorgeous piece Felicia! Just keep going a little bigger each time. Alisa Burke is leading her larger than life online class right now which is all about going bigger. I'm loving it!

  2. I suppose going bigger, the blank page syndrome gets bigger too! I've been thinking of doing some bigger collages, but haven't done it yet...maybe I will now! This looks great!

  3. Very cool! I do work big sometimes, but am rather impatient and bigger pieces just take so much more time (and paint). :-)

  4. Thank you all. Really great thoughts to ponder. I really think fear is masking itself as other reasons in a lot of ways. I am challenging myself to continue to go bigger!

  5. Even in the larger piece, Felicia, your control of your brush is magnificent! Another wonderful piece of artwork!

  6. Kay, seeing your comment REALLY helps me today. I've spent the last few days feeling intimidated by larger canvases for some reason. I appreciate your kind words and encouragement.
